3. THREE STAGE PREPARATION STRATEGY FOR CIVIL SERVICES

The preparation strategy of Civil Services examination can be divided into three stages and each stage  play an important role. These Stages are;
  • Basic Study - NCERT
  • Advance Study - Reference Books
  • Current based Study - Magazines, News
NCERT books are core of basic study (First Stage) preparation. Without completing basic study of any topic we can't move on to advance study (Second Stage).

Reference books are core of advance study (Second stage) preparation. Without completing advance study of any topic we can not jump to current based study (Third Stage) of that topic.

Current affairs monthly magazines and newspapers are core of current based study (Third Stage).

Lets understand these three stages of preparation with appropriate example. Suppose we have to prepare indian polity for general studies paper. In that case reading polity NCERT is Basic Stage (first stage) of preparation. After that we can read Indian polity by M Laxmikanth, as a reference book, which is advance stage (second stage) of preparation. And at current based study (third stage) we use current affair magazines and newspapers to try to understand practical implications of Indian political system.

5. HOW TO READ NCERT BOOKS

In my opinion it is important to underline important facts while reading NCERT books for the first time. In the second time you should try to optimize underlined facts in your mind. Once you complete all NCERT books then make a plan and revise it at least for five times. Preparing notes is not essential. Just use underlined stuff in the book as your notes. Reading NCERT means you must be remembering key facts and concept of that book. Unlike Novels, NCERT books are supposed to be revised every now and then.
