2. STEP-I; UNDERSTANDING EXAM PATTERN

First of all try to understand exam pattern. BPSC examination is conducted in three stages viz; pre, mains and interview. There will be only one question paper in pre exam which consists of 150 multiple choice questions. A candidate is allotted 2 hours time to solve these 150 questions. Here it is important to inform you that multiple choice questions will have five options. Out of these five options you will have to choose and encircle one correct answer in your OMR sheet. It is also pertinent to mention that as of now there is no provision of negative marking is bpse pre exam.

BPSC mains examination is consists of four descriptive type papers. These papers are as follows.
  • General Hindi
  • General Studies Paper1
  • General Studies Paper2
  • Optional Paper

3. STEP-II; CHOOSING OPTIONAL SUBJECT

BPSC examination is conducted in three stages viz; pre, mains and interview. Each stage of preparation is integrated with each other. Due to integrated nature of all three stages your preparation for all stages should go altogether. If you are only focussed for pre exam and even if you qualified the same then without integrated approach you won't be able to get through mains exam. This is because of the reason that the nature of question at pre stage and at mains stage is quite different. Even you will have to choose one optional subject for bpsc mains exam. The syllabus of optional subject would be somewhat similar to syllabus of that subject in three years degree course. So before you start preparation, you should have clear picture in your mind for optional paper.

4. STEP-III; UNDERSTANDING SYLLABUS

Most of the bpsc aspirants have a common doubt that anything and everything can be asked in civil services examination. This myth is biggest hurdle for such candidates to get through this exam. It is reiterate to mention that like other competitive exams, bpsc exam also have a defined syllabus. If you analyse previous year question, then you reach to the conclusion that questions in bpsc pre exam and in bpsc mains exams are asked strictly as per defined syllabus. Hence it is important to understand syllabus line by line before starting preparation. I would like to advise you to take print out of the the syllabus and keep that on your table for ready reference. Don't read any topic outside the syllabus. This step will save your precious preparation time as well as guide your preparation in right direction. Syllabus for the bpsc exam is available on official bpsc website.

5. STEP-IV; REFERRING PREVIOUS YEAR PRE EXAM QUESTION PAPER

This is most important step before you start reading books. First of all download previous year question booklet from internet and refer those question paper meticulously. You must refer at least last 5 years pre question paper. Referring previous years questions will let you understand the level and structure of questions. If you observe syllabus of UPSC pre exam and BPSC pre exam, then you reach to the conclusion that syllabus of both the exams are almost same. But the level of question being asked in upsc pre exam and bpsc pre exam is entirely different. UPSC pre consists of analysis based questions whereas BPSC pre consists of fact based questions. Hence it is highly advisable to all aspirants to refer previous years question papers for better understanding.

6. STEP-V; READING NCERT BOOKS

Before onset of this step, you will be having a good understanding of bpsc syllabus as well as bpsc pre exam question pattern. Now in this step you should purchase NCERT books and start reading these books. You must refer NCERT books starting from class 6 upto class 12. Underline important facts while reading NCERT books. Read these books at least 5 times before you jump to read reference books on different subjects. In my opinion preparation of notes out of NCERT book is not required for bpsc pre exam. Just use important underlined facts out of the book for revision.

  5. Dear Sir,
I hope you are fine and all is going well.
I am working professional and started preparing for BPSC.
I am confused about Language selection for mains writing.
In optional paper, I like to select electrical engg. paper and I have comfort with English language writing in this paper only.
But all subjects except optional paper are being prepared by me in Hindi language.
Kindly guide us whether should I change optional paper or May I give GS paper1 , GS paper2 in Hindi language and Optional paper in English language?
I hope you will guide me.

    Thanks and Regards
    Deepak Kumar
