2. BEFORE YOU START

This is most important aspect of statistics preparation. You must have a firm belief that statistics is one of the most soft target in bpsc mains exam. I don't understand why many candidates have a fear factor for statistics. This article is definitely going to help you to overcome your fear factor for statistics. In this paragraph i am going to tell what you are supposed to do before opening statistics books. First of all you should learn elementary mathematics and some of their important topics. Here are some important topics you should master before solving statistics.
  • Percentage
  • Average
  • Proportion
  • Profit and Loss
First of all you should command these topics from any elementary mathematics books. It is almost impossible solving statistics questions without learning above mentioned topics.

3. STATISTICS BOOKS

There are several books available in the market for preparation of statistics for bpsc exam. Just buy a single book and Start practising with the help of that. I would like to suggest you to buy the book "Statistics for BPSC" by LK Jha. You can also check other books available in the market. If you are writing mains exam in English medium then u can choose spectrum publication book for statistics. Here i will provide you the link to download LK Jha statistics book.

4. STATISTICS PREPARATION STRATEGY

You should start your preparation just after Pre examination. You are not supposed to wait till declaration of pre result. Plan study hour and reserve at least one time time each day for statistics practice. It is advised to solve only two to three questions per day from your statistics practice book. At the outset, you may take longer time to solve one question. But if you practice consistently then the time will come down slowly slowly. You all might be aware about the fact that you hardly get 23 minutes per question time in bpsc mains exam.

Your aim should be reducing solving time for per question and stick that time to 25 minutes. It is also advised not to solve daily same type of questions. If you observe previous years statistics questions asked in mains exam then you reach to the conclusion that mostly three types of questions are being asked. These are bar diagram, line diagram and pie chart. If one particular day you practice line diagram, then next day you must practice bar diagram and next day it should be pie chart and so on. That will be helpful for your preparation in an integrated manner. You must also use calculator for calculations while solving statistics questions. It is pertinent to mention that, use of calculator is allowed in bpsc mains exam gs paper1.

5. STRUCTURE OF QUESTIONS

BPSC Mains exam consists of total 2 general studies papers; viz gs paper1 and gs paper2. Statistics is part of general studies paper1. Four questions are being asked from statistics and out of four questions a candidate is supposed to answer only 2. Each question carry 36 marks thus a total number of 72 marks question being asked from statistics in bpsc mains gs paper1. Each question is also divided into 5 to 6 sub questions.

6. HOW TO APPROACH IN EXAM

In this paragraph i am going to discuss some basic questions being asked by many aspirants. Let's see these questions one by one and after that i will explain it to you.

  • Should i solve statistics questions first before other section in gs paper 1?
  • Is marking in statistics done in steps?
  • Is calculator allowed for statistics?
  • Should i calculate secondary data before solving statistics questions?
Now let's discuss one by one. Most of the candidates have a very common doubt in respect of preference for solving statistics questions. Some people first attempt statistics questions and some others attempt section 1 and section 2. In my opinion you should attempt statistics questions at last. Just manage time in exam and try to solve 6 question of section 1 and section 2 in 2 hours 10 min. You must have 50 minutes time duration to solve statistics. If you start statistics at first and due to some reason you stuck somewhere, then high chances are there that you leave some questions unanswered.

Now let's discuss on second issue. In my opinion marking in statistics is done in step wise. If your process solving the question is correct and still you couldn't reach to correct answer then also you will be assigned with some marks.

Calculator is allowed in gs paper 1. The calculator should be basic and not scientific. You must carry calculator without fail. If you don't carry calculator in mains exam, then you are going to loose precious time in calculations.

Some aspirants solve the questions directly from primary data and some others first calculate secondary data based on primary data and then proceed to solve the questions. If you first calculate secondary data, then it will be easy for you to solve the questions. In my opinion you should first calculate secondary data and then solve the questions.
